Starting March 2005, all manufacturers bidding on GSA contracts for personal protective clothing and Wildland Fire Fighting equipment must be compliant with the NFPA 1977 standard, which includes mandatory ISO 9001 Quality Management System registration. This requirement, while part of the NFPA 1977 standard since 1998, had previously been waived for GSA procurements but will now be strictly enforced following issuance of the new NFPA 1977-2005 edition. There will be a six-month phase-in period during which firms must ensure their products meet the updated certification criteria. The certification applies to a range of current items such as Wildland Firefighter’s face-and-neck shrouds, helmets, shirts, pants, work gloves, complete field packs, fireline packs, chainsaw operator’s chaps, and safety goggles, with the potential for the list of covered products to expand in the future. The mandate reflects the Wildland Fire Community’s commitment to enhanced quality assurance and safety standards, requiring all manufacturers to maintain ISO 9001 registration to participate in future GSA solicitations for compliant clothing and equipment. The contract falls under NAICS code 315999 and is managed by the GSA/FAS Region 7 Acquisition Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
