The only source for heating fuel in Kaktovik is the Kaktovik Inupiat Corporation (KIC) fuel station. SUPPORTING INFORMATIONBarter Island is a remote location on the Arctic coast, 90 miles west of the Canadian border and 278 miles southeast of Barrow. KIC is the only available supplier of heating fuel in the village. In addition to refuge scientific operations, the Arctic NWR bunkhouse supports community outreach, USGS climate research, and Marine Mammals research conducted on Barter Island. EFFORTS TO LOCATE OTHER SOURCESKIC is the only retailer for heating fuel delivery in Kaktovik, Alaska. Transporting heating fuel from Fairbanks or Deadhorse to this remote location is cost-prohibitive when this type of fuel is available locally. This location is not accessible by road.
