THIS REQUIREMENT HAS CHANGED AND IS DESCRIBED IN THE MARKET SURVEY BELOW. RESPONSES PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED DUE TO THE CHANGE OF THE REQUIREMENT, THEREFORE NEW RESPONSES ARE REQUIRED. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is requesting information concerning capabilities to manufacture approximately 1,200 Limiter/Low Noise Amplification (LNA) assemblies in accordance with FAA’s salient characteristics. The Limiter provides peak power RF protection to the LNA, which is the first stage of amplification to an L-Band radar receiver. The Limiter/LNA assemblies are used in support of the AIR Route Surveillance Radar 4 (ARSR-4) Long Range Radar System. Salient Characteristics are as follows: 1.0 SCOPE This specification describes a solid-state Limiter/Low Noise Amplifier assembly, which is to be used for peak power RF protection and as the first stage of amplification to an L-Band radar receiver. 2.0 REQUIRMENTS 2.1 GENERAL The Limiter supplies 2K Watts of protection to the LNA for 150 usec. The LNA assembly is used on each of the 23 azimuth assemblies for the receive target paths, and in the receive weather and receive reference paths to provide a 25 dB gain to the receive signals. 2.2 ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS 2.2.1 FREQUENCY The unit shall be capable of operation within specified limits over the frequency range of 1215 to 1400 MHz. 2.2.2 GAIN The unit will have a gain of 25 dB, with a deviation no greater than 0.5 dB. 2.2.3 INSERTION PHASE The insertion phase of S21 should be 165 degrees, with a deviation no greater than 5 degrees. 2.2.4 VSWR The maximum VSWR @ J1 is 1.32:1. The maximum VSWR @ J2 is 1.3:1. 2.2.5 CURRENT DRAIN The maximum current drain on the +20 VDC supply is 250 mA. The maximum current drain on the –20 VDC supply is 20 mA. 2.2.6 ON/OFF RATIO The on/off ratio should be greater than 45 dB. 2.2.7 NOISE FIGURE The noise figure of the unit should be no greater than 1.2 dB. 2.2.8 INPUT POWER REQUIREMENTS The power available to the amplifier shall be +20 VDC, -20 VDC, and 5 VDC. The ARSR-4 system supplies the raw voltages and the LNA provides line and load regulation. 2.2.9 COMPRESSION POINT The 1 dB compression point at J2 (RF output) occurs with an input greater than –10 dBm @ J1 (RF input). 2.2.10 SWITCHING TIME Turn on time must be less than 1.5 usec. Turn off time must be less than 5 usec. 2.3 MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS 2.3.1 SIZE Physical size of the unit shall be as shown in figure 1, which will be furnished at a later date. 2.3.2 EXTERIOR SURFACES The exterior of the unit shall be plated or finished to meet the environmental requirements specified in paragraph 2.4.3. 2.3.3 MOUNTING The mounting of the LNA/Limiter assemble shall per figure 2. 2.3.4 CONNECTORS 2.3.4.1 J3 INPUT POWER CONNECTOR Power is applied through connector J3. The part number for the J3 connector is MS3102A14S-6P. The pin out for the connector is as follows: PIN 1 +20 VDC, 2 Positive TTL control, 5 –20 VDC, 6 +20 VDC Return, 7 Negative TTL control, 9 –20 VDC Return. 2.3.4.2 J2 LNA OUTPUT The RF output signal leaves the unit at J2. The J2 connector is a female N-Type receptacle. 2.3.4.3 J1 LNA INPUT The RF input signal is applied to the unit at J1. The J1 connector is a female N-Type receptacle. 2.3.4.4 J2 LIMITER OUTPUT The RF output signal leaves the unit at J2. The J2 connector is a male N-Type receptacle. 2.3.4.5 J1 LIMITER INPUT The RF input signal is applied to the unit at J1. The J1 connector is a female N-Type receptacle. 2.4 RELIABILITY AND MAINTAINABILITY 2.4.1 RELIABILITY The unit shall have a minimum mean time between failure (MTBF) rate of 20,000 hours. 2.4.2 ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE The design of the unit shall be such that it can perform its operational function in the high power radar environment. There shall not be any interference to radar performance from the unit. 2.4.3 SERVICE CONDITION The unit shall be designed to operate with ambient temperature between -10°C to 50°C and with a relative humidity from 5% to 90%. The unit shall perform to specifications in a rotating and vibrating environment, as seen by a radar antenna. 2.4.4 HERMETICITY The unit shall be hermetically sealed to eliminate corrosion of internal components. 2.5 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 2.5.1 FIRST ARTICLE There shall be a first article of 1 unit issued by the selected manufacture for initial testing and acceptance. Upon approval there shall be a second article of 29 units issued by the selected manufacture for system level testing and final acceptance. 2.5.2 REPAIR CAPABILITIES The Limiter/LNA assembly shall be designed to allow for isolated testing and repair capabilities for both the Limiter and LNA from the remainder of the assembly. The manufacturer shall provide the FAA with full testing and repair capabilities. The manufacturer shall furnish any necessary equipment, repair and tuning procedures, and test fixtures to the FAA. Interested parties who have the capability to manufacture the described requirement should respond with their documentation in writing to: Federal Aviation Administration Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center P.O.
