The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to award a sole source purchase order to the Food Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for the purification and evaluation of subtyping methodologies of botulinum toxins. The project involves isolating and purifying unusual subtypes of botulinum neurotoxin from various strains of Clostridium botulinum, including types A1, A2, A3, and potentially A4, as well as type B variants B1, B2, and B3 from both proteolytic and nonproteolytic strains. In cases where sufficient toxin quantities cannot be obtained from cultures, recombinant light chains will be provided as substitutes. This work is critical for understanding the structural and functional diversity of botulinum toxins. This procurement will proceed under sole source authority (FAR 6.302-1 and 6.302-2), as CDC has determined that only the Food Research Institute can meet the agency’s specific requirements. No solicitation will be issued, and no set-aside for small business applies. The point of contact for contractual inquiries is Beth West, the Procurement Technician at CDC. The contract focuses specifically on botulinum toxin complexes, reflecting a specialized and unique research capability held by the Food Research Institute.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intends to issue a sole source purchase order to Food Research Institute, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin for a Botulinum Toxin Purification and Evaluation of Subtyping Methodologies. Responsibilities for this project include purification of unusual subtypes of botulinum neurotoxin from cultures of Clostridium botulinum as well as purification of botulinum neurotoxin from a variety of Clostridium botulinum foodborne. Specifically, the laboratory will provide botulinum toxin complexes from A1, A2, A3, and potentially A4 C. botulinum strains. Recombinantly produced light chains may be provided instead of A3 and A4 toxins if sufficient quantities cannot be isolated from C. botulinum cultures. Botulinum neurotoxin complexes will be isolated from ten type A, ten proteolytic type B and ten nonproteolytic type B C. botulinumcultures. Complexes will be purified from B1, B2, and B3 C. botulinum variants, or alternatively, recombinant light chains from B1, B2, and B3 if sufficient quantities of complex cannot be isolated from C. botulinum culture.CDC believes that this requirement is met by only one provider. This procurement will be processed under the authority of FAR 6.302-1 and 6.302-2. Only one responsible source and no other sources will satisfy agency requirements. No solicitation is being issued.
