The Uniformed Services University is initiating a sole source contract negotiation with Inologic, Inc. to conduct specialized research on Inositol Signaling Molecules. This project aims to develop a small molecule drug based on inositol polyphosphates that can prevent or reverse damage caused by ionizing radiation. The rationale behind the research is grounded in the natural cellular mechanisms that repair radiation-induced damage via intracellular signaling pathways, where inositol signaling molecules play a critical regulatory role. The expected outcome is the creation of an analog of these molecules that could specifically enhance DNA double strand break repair and bolster cell recovery processes, acting as a radioprotective agent to safeguard cells, particularly bone marrow progenitor cells, from radiation damage. The contract will focus on identifying lead candidates among these inositol signaling molecule analogs with potential to advance into further development and testing as radiation countermeasures. The work falls under the authority of 10 U.S.C. 2304(c)(1) and is being managed by the Office of the Department of Defense at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. Michelle Creenan serves as the contracting specialist for this effort, which was posted as a presolicitation to encourage focused research on mitigating the harmful effects of radiation exposure through innovative biochemical approaches.

Full Description

The Uniformed Services University proposes to negotiate a contract, on a sole source basis, with Inologic, Inc. to conduct research on Inositol Signaling Molecules. This action is being undertaken under the authority at 10 U.S.C. 2304(c)(1). The overall aim of this effort is to develop a small molecule inositol polyphosphate drug that prevents and/or reverses the deleterious effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. In normal cells intrinsic pathways exist to repair radiation induced damage through activation of intracellular signaling pathways. Inositol signaling molecules are key components of intracellular signaling and figure prominently in the regulation of radiation repair mechanisms and it is expected that analogues of specific inositol-signaling molecules (ISM) can be developed that could be used in a very specific manner to affect DNA double strand repair breaks and boost cell repair processes. This ISM analog would act as a radioprotective agent that could be used to protect cells from radiation damage and could restore or protect bone marrow progenitor cells. This contract seeks to identify lead candidate ISMs that can be moved forward for further development and testing in models as radiation countermeasures.
