Arundell Barranca Detention Basin Cleanout

The Ventura County Watershed Protection District is seeking to perform a cleanout of the 5.9-acre Arundell Barranca Detention Basin in Ventura, California. The project involves the removal of approximately 70,000 cubic yards of accumulated sediment and debris, much of which was captured during the 2023 and 2024 storm seasons. Work is scheduled to take place between September and December 2025, with an anticipated duration of 65 working days. Access to the site will be provided via Sexton Canyon Road and County-owned Right-of-Way, and all excavated debris must be disposed of at a site approved by the County of Ventura Integrated Waste Management Division. The operation requires a variety of heavy equipment, including wheel loaders, bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks, water trucks, and street sweepers. To ensure environmental compliance, the project will adhere to the May 2008 Final Program Environmental Impact Report and specific Best Management Practices for water diversion. Biological surveys will be conducted before and during the project to protect sensitive resources, and the removal of mature trees is strictly prohibited. The project is categorized as exempt under Class 1 Existing Facilities as it constitutes routine maintenance without expansion. Administrative oversight is led by Jeff Palmer, Assistant Director of the Watershed Protection District.
