Barstow Sanitary Landfill Expansion

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has issued an ITP (No. 2081-2025-0139-06), pursuant to Section 2081(b) of the Fish and Game Code to San Bernardino County Public Works Department. The Project involves the expansion of the Barstow Sanitary Landfill and will develop 127-acres of undisturbed open space for the construction of Phase 1C of the Barstow Sanitary Landfill. Project activities will include vegetation removal and grading of the entire Project Area, excavation of the expansion area, construction of access roads, water lines, erosion control, and the construction of a containment system and exclusionary fencing. The Project will result in impacts to 127 acres of Agassiz’s desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) and western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) habitat. The project is expected to result in incidental take of Agassiz’s desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), which is designated as an endangered species under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and incidental take of western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea), which is designated as a candidate species for potential listing under CESA. The ITP referenced above as issued by CDFW authorizes incidental take of species listed under CESA that may occur as a result of Project implementation.
