AI Contract Overview
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, plans to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aimed at advancing research in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD). This funding will focus specifically on rigorous preclinical drug target validation and early-stage drug discovery efforts targeting novel therapeutic candidates. The initiative supports the development of small molecules, biologics, and innovative therapeutic modalities, utilizing the U01 cooperative agreement mechanism. Although applications are not currently being accepted, the notice serves to inform and encourage investigators with expertise in AD/ADRD and drug discovery to begin preparing collaborative and responsive proposals. The upcoming NOFO will not allow clinical trials and emphasizes early-stage research to expand the therapeutic pipeline for treating and preventing AD and ADRD. The NIA is providing this advance notice to help potential applicants organize meaningful collaborations and optimize project development. Interested parties can direct inquiries to the NIA scientific contact and monitor the NIH grants portal for the official release, scheduled for early March 2026. This effort reflects a strategic priority to support innovative approaches in drug discovery against novel targets to ultimately improve outcomes for patients affected by these neurodegenerative conditions.

Full Description
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) drug target validation and early-stage drug discovery against novel targets. This NOFO will utilize the U01 activity code. The NOFO will support rigorous preclinical AD/ADRD drug target validation and early-stage drug discovery of small molecules, biologic, and emerging therapeutic modalities. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. Investigators with expertise and insights into AD/ADRD and drug discovery are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO.
