Metro is initiating a project to replace approximately 450 aging fare vending machines located at all Metrorail mezzanines, including exit fare machines on the paid side of the faregates. The current machines, which are around 40 years old, are no longer fully functional due to obsolete parts such as patron screens and keypads. The new system aims to modernize fare payment options by providing a uniform type of vending machine, reducing the total number of machines in operation, and supporting multiple payment methods, including mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Android Pay, as well as open payment options using credit cards. This initiative is not a direct replacement but a strategic update to accommodate evolving customer preferences and technological advancements, moving away from cash-only and mixed payment machines. The procurement effort is formalized through a solicitation posted by WMATA, with a response deadline set for April 29, 2025. The project is estimated to have a contract value between 50 million and 100 million dollars. The contract will be managed by the District of Columbia office, with Gustavo Pardo Jimenez serving as the primary contact. The project aligns with WMATA’s broader goal of enhancing customer convenience and operational efficiency by deploying a streamlined, modern fare vending system capable of supporting future payment innovations.

Full Description

Metro is embarking on a program to procure, test, and install new fare vending machines (FVM) at all Metrorail mezzanines, including the exit fare machines on the paid side of the faregates, about 450 in all. The fare vendors are now 40 years old and parts like the patron screen and keypads are no longer available.   While many customers have switched to using SmarTrip in mobile wallets for Apple and Android phones, Metro is committed to providing our customers multiple convenient options for paying fares.  This not a true replacement project because the new system will have a smaller number of machines than are currently in use due to the expanding use of mobile wallets and the upcoming implementation of open payments (using credit cards instead of SmarTrip cards to tap and pay).  There will also be only a single type of machine whereas now we have cash-only, cash-and-credit, and exit fare vendors.
