The City of New Haven has issued a request for qualifications from multidisciplinary teams capable of leading the adaptive reuse of the historic Goffe Street Armory, a prominent 1915 structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places and significant to Black history and civil rights. The project aims to transform the 160,000-square-foot landmark into a vibrant community hub, emphasizing neighborhood revitalization through three primary components: a career-connected technology school to support workforce development, affordable housing integrated into a mixed-use development, and community use spaces tailored to neighborhood needs. The redevelopment process is driven by extensive community engagement led by the Armory Community Advisory Committee, ensuring the project aligns with local priorities and fosters inclusive growth. The selected consulting team must demonstrate expertise in historic building adaptive reuse, community-driven planning, and integrating climate and equity considerations into project design and development. The contract, with a budget ranging from $500,000 to $2 million, will adhere to City of New Haven’s standard terms for professional services, including compliance with federal and state laws, nondiscrimination policies, and labor requirements. The project’s success relies on the team’s ability to synthesize community input into detailed planning and coordinate effectively with various city departments and community stakeholders to facilitate a timely and impactful renovation of the Armory, ultimately creating a dynamic, community-centered destination in the Dixwell neighborhood.
