AI Contract Overview
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is preparing to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to renew its Genomics Research to Elucidate the Genetics of Rare Disease (GREGoR) program through a new initiative called GREGoR: Innovation (GREGoRi). This initiative aims to transform the diagnosis of rare genetic disorders by developing innovative tools, molecular technologies, and analytical methods to better identify causal genes and variants. Central to this effort is the establishment of a Data Coordination and Outreach Center, which will serve as the hub for coordinating the GREGoRi program’s activities and ensuring that data, metadata, computational tools, and protocols generated by the program are accessible to the wider research community. The NOFO is designed to give prospective applicants ample time to build partnerships and create responsive proposals, with the solicitation expected to be published in 2025 and application submissions due in 2026. The funding mechanism will use the U01 cooperative agreement activity code, and clinical trials will not be permitted under this award. The program is managed by the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, specifically under NHGRI, and interested parties can contact Lisa H. Chadwick at the NHGRI for further information. This initiative underscores a strategic effort to accelerate breakthroughs in rare disease genomics by fostering collaboration and data sharing across the research community.

Full Description
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to renew the Genomics Research to Elucidate the Genetics of Rare Disease (GREGoR) program. The renewal, called GREGoR: Innovation (GREGoRi), seeks to accelerate a paradigm shift in rare disease diagnosis by reimagining the tools, molecular technologies and analytical approaches used to identify the causal gene(s) and/or variant(s) underlying rare genetic disorders. The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity is to establish the GREGoRi Data Coordination and Outreach Center. The Data Coordination and Outreach Center will act as the central point of coordination for the GREGoRi Research Program, and will be responsible for ensuring that the data, metadata, computational tools and other protocols developed as part of GREGoRi are made available to the broader research community.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The NOFO is expected to be published in 2025 with an expected application due date in 2026. This NOFO will utilize the U01 activity code.
