The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), supported by the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM), is hosting an industry day focused on High Efficiency Distributed Lighting (HEDLight) on September 19, 2002, in Arlington, VA. This event is designed to engage potential bidders and stakeholders to inform them about DARPA’s interest in innovative lighting technologies that could enhance military platform survivability and improve the visual acuity of warfighters. Attendance is optional but highly recommended. The industry day will include presentations outlining program goals and technical interests, which cover high-efficiency full-spectrum light sources, coupling optics, optical-fiber luminaires, and integrated fiber illuminators. The program aims to demonstrate lighting systems with specific performance targets such as electrical efficiency of at least 50 lumens per watt (goal 70), mass efficiency of 2 lumens per gram (goal 5), and output between 1,000 and 5,000 lumens, with color temperatures and full-spectrum white lighting that supports task-specific applications. Advance registration by September 12, 2002, is required, and attendees will be notified of the exact meeting location by September 16. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the event, or submit questions beforehand via email. This industry day serves as a preliminary engagement prior to a potential Broad Agency Announcement from AMCOM, though no solicitation is currently issued. DARPA and AMCOM personnel will provide programmatic and technical guidance, with contact information provided for inquiries. The initiative emphasizes collaboration and information sharing among industry participants to support the future development of advanced distributed lighting technologies tailored for defense applications.
