The contract outlines a one-year evaluation program led by the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) to assess Ion Mobility Spectrometer (IMS) systems for potential use in monitoring water, specifically in connection with the Army’s Tactical Water Purification System (TWPS). The program aims to establish proof of concept for these IMS technologies by testing in controlled laboratory conditions with water samples spiked with surrogate chemical warfare agents such as nerve, blister, and blood agents. Following successful laboratory evaluation, the contract includes a phase for closed-loop testing involving actual chemical warfare agents at a secure facility within the Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. The program begins with a Participants Workshop scheduled for March 21, 2005, at the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park in Richmond, Virginia. Interested companies were encouraged to register by March 13, 2005, to receive preparatory materials ahead of the workshop. Laboratory testing will take place at a contractor facility in Richmond, while the more sensitive testing involving chemical agents will be conducted at the Army’s secure facility in Maryland. This effort supports the Department of Defense’s interest in developing effective, adaptable water monitoring systems to enhance the operational safety and effectiveness of the Army’s water purification processes.

The evaluation program consists of a one year test program to evaluate proof of concept IMS systems in the laboratory using water s amples spiked with nerve, blister, and blood agent surrogates followed by a closed loop water treatment system evaluation with chemical warfare agents to be conducted at a surety facility. Laboratory evaluations are to be conducted at a contractor facilit y in Richmond, Virginia, and subsequent closed loop testing is to be conducted at the U.S. Armys Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground. Program will begin with a Participants Workshop for potential participants to be held at the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park (www.vabiotech.com) in Richmond, Virginia, on March 21, 2005, at 9:00 AM.
