AI Contract Overview

The Lead Agency process, managed by the Swiss National Science Foundation, enables researchers in Switzerland and one of six partner countries or regions to submit joint research proposals. Funding is governed by the rules of the respective national organizations, with the SNSF overseeing Swiss subprojects and the partner organization managing those abroad. While trilateral applications are not supported, researchers may include project partners from other countries provided their costs do not exceed 20 percent of the Swiss budget. Applications must be submitted in English and simultaneously to all involved funders, with a limit of one proposal per twelve-month period and a maximum of two simultaneous project funding grants. Depending on which organization acts as the Lead Agency, submission deadlines and procedures vary, though all Swiss-based applicants must use the mySNF portal. If the SNSF is the Lead Agency, submissions occur on April 1 or October 1. If a partner organization leads, the Swiss application must be filed within seven days of the partner's deadline. Budget calculations follow national guidelines, and applicants must ensure there are no thematic overlaps with existing project funding. It is important to note that success rates for these applications typically align with the lower rates of the partner countries rather than standard SNSF rates.

Full Description

The Lead Agency process allows researchers in Switzerland and a partner country to submit a joint research proposal to either of the two national funding organisations.
Weave
Project funding is the SNSF scheme that supports Lead Agency applications. SNSF rules apply to the subprojects in Switzerland. The participation requirements of the partner organisation apply to the subproject abroad.A Lead Agency application can be submitted provided there are no thematic overlaps with project funding grants that are already under way.Because of coordination activities with the partner organisation, the evaluation usually takes longer than for regular projects. The Lead Agency process does not support trilateral applications. But you can collaborate with researchers from further countries by designating them "project partners", regardless of whether the SNSF has signed an agreement with the countries in question. No more than 20% of the Swiss budget can be allocated for project partners.Costs are calculated on the basis of the relevant national guidelines. In most partner countries, the success rates are lower than the SNSF rates. These lower rates are applied to Lead Agency applications submitted to the SNSF.Who the Lead Agency will be, and the corresponding application requirements, will depend on the agreement in place with the country in question. In general, one submission per year is possible either to the SNSF or to the partner organisation. Please consult the respective country pages.
If the evaluation is carried out by a partner organisation, the application must still be submitted via mySNF within seven days.
Participating countries
The SNSF has signed a Lead Agency agreement with six countries or regions.

Researchers may submit only one project funding proposal within a twelve-month period. Exceptions apply to proposals that were rejected in random selection or that were recommended for funding by the SNSF within the framework of Weave/Lead Agency but were not approved by the partner organisation. Researchers may have a maximum of two simultaneous grants in project funding. One of these must be a Weave/Lead Agency/ICIS project. As part of a transitional measure, collaborative projects approved prior to April 2026 will be counted as Lead Agency/Weave/ICIS projects until the end of their scheduled duration. If the SNSF is the Lead Agency, applications are submitted to the SNSF within the calls for project funding on 1 April or 1 October. Applicants cannot simultaneously submit any further project funding applications. The submission takes place via the portal. For administrative reasons, the applicants based abroad need to simultaneously submit to their respective funders the application to be evaluated by the SNSF as Lead Agency. Please enter the applicants based abroad as co-applicants.Enter the budget of the Swiss subproject in in the section “Budget”. Postdoc.Mobility
Solicitation # XIZpfY3iVS5KRRoD
The Postdoc.Mobility fellowship, administered by the Swiss National Science Foundation, supports postdoctoral researchers in conducting research stays abroad to enhance their scientific networks, independence, and research profiles for future academic careers in Switzerland. The program provides funding for subsistence costs, travel expenses, and potential research and conference costs. Additionally, fellowship holders may apply for a return grant to finance their initial research period upon returning to Switzerland, which includes a salary and social security contributions. The standard funding period is 24 months for the fellowship and between 3 to 12 months for the return phase. Eligibility is restricted to individuals with Swiss citizenship, a Swiss permanent settlement permit, or those married to or in a registered partnership with a Swiss citizen. Alternatively, applicants may qualify if they hold a doctorate or state examination from a Swiss institution and have not previously held a postdoctoral position abroad. General requirements include completing a doctorate within six months of application, with submissions typically due within three years of the doctoral exam, or within eight years for medical researchers without an MD-PhD who have at least three years of clinical activity. As the SNSF reforms its career funding, the final submission deadline for Postdoc.Mobility is August 3, 2027, with a new postdoctoral funding scheme scheduled for launch in 2028. The funding is intended to build collaboration and accelerate impact across CDC’s network. The opportunity is posted under NAICS code 813211 and is managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, operating under the Department of Health and Human Services. Funding covers travel expenses, accommodation, meals, and specific childcare allowances, with regional travel budget maximums ranging from CHF 500 for Europe to CHF 2,000 for Oceania. Applications must be submitted via the mySNF platform at least four months prior to the event or visit. Evaluation is based on the quality, originality, and relevance of the exchange, the scientific expertise of the participants, the mutual benefit of the collaboration, and the overall feasibility. Required documentation includes specific templates for events or visits, CVs for applicants and invited participants, and a research plan of up to six pages for visits. Following the exchange, a scientific report of up to five pages and relevant output data must be submitted within six weeks. Grants must be managed by an official financial administration rather than the applicant personally, and any unused funds must be reimbursed upon completion of the financial report.

Grant
Open access article publications
Solicitation # ozKDc97zu0ZBwCfJ
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides grants to cover publication costs for high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific research directly linked to SNSF-funded projects. Funding is specifically designated for the gold open access route, ensuring research is immediately available free of charge and without restrictions. Eligible funding includes Article Processing Charges (APCs) for journal articles, Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPCs), and Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for monographs and edited volumes. Starting January 1, 2027, the upper limit for APCs is 3,500 francs, and the SNSF will no longer cover costs exceeding this amount. Funding for BPCs varies by module, with a basic module up to 12,000 francs and supplementary modules ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 francs based on character count. To qualify, articles must be published in fully open access journals of a recognized scientific standard; publications in hybrid journals and special issues are not funded. Eligible researchers must be part of an SNSF-funded project, and the grant number must be cited in the article's acknowledgments. The SNSF utilizes ChronosHub as a service partner for processing APC invoices, which, as of January 1, 2025, are paid directly to publishers rather than as refunds to authors. For BPCs, strict quality control is required, including at least one external independent written review of the entire manuscript. Applications are accepted year-round via the designated SNSF or partner platforms, provided that metadata is submitted and the work is deposited in approved repositories.
