Middle-Mile Broadband Network Hub Shelters No. 1 & 2

The California Department of Transportation District 3, in coordination with the California Department of Technology, is forecasting a project to construct two middle-mile broadband network hub shelters on State Route 299 in Trinity County. Shelter No. 1 will be located between post miles R3.4 and 3.9, and Shelter No. 2 will be located between post miles 47.4 and 48.5, serving the areas of Weaverville and Trinity Village. The primary objective of these facilities is to provide the necessary transmission and amplification of broadband signals. The project is classified under NAICS code 237130 and has been granted a CEQA exemption under Public Resources Code Section 21080.51 and a NEPA categorical exclusion. The scope of work for each site includes the installation of a concrete foundation and a network hub building, along with two pull vaults and two splice vaults. Infrastructure requirements include two-inch high-density polyethylene conduit, conductor and fiber optic cables, a 1,000-gallon underground propane tank, and a 60-kilowatt generator on a concrete pad. Each site will be secured by a 50-foot by 50-foot chain link fence with two gates. Additional work involves vegetation removal, electrical service trenching, and the construction of paved driveways, with specific trenching lengths for electrical and fiber optic lines varying by location. Project administration is led by Branch Chief Dotrik Wilson and Project Manager Steve Rogers.
