ODECART (Objective DECision framework for Air-based Research Travel)

The ODECART project, managed by the Klimaatonderzoek Initiatief Nederland under the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by addressing the lack of governance in academic air travel. The initiative focuses on developing an objective, evidence-based decision-making framework and a transparent support tool that evaluates environmental, organizational, societal, and personal factors to determine the necessity of flights. By implementing and validating this tool within Dutch universities, the project seeks to replace individual judgment with a consistent and fair process to prevent unnecessary travel before emissions occur. The ultimate goal is to foster climate-aware travel habits while ensuring that the quality and societal value of academic collaboration remain protected.
