NASA’s Johnson Space Center is advancing Phase II development of the International Space Station’s Common Docking Adapter (CDA) under the United States On-Orbit Segment Acceptance and Vehicle Sustaining Engineering Contract, NAS 15-10000, exclusively awarded to The Boeing Company. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, this effort focuses on refining the CDA assembly, which consists of three main parts: the Common Passive Docking Interface (CPDI), the Tunnel, and the Passive Common Berthing Mechanism (PCBM). The CPDI is designed to be compatible with docking interfaces from both the Constellation Program’s Orion spacecraft and the European Space Agency’s Advanced Re-entry Vehicle, facilitating their docking to the USOS. This announcement serves solely for informational purposes and will not prompt a new request for proposals, as the work is proceeding through a Change Order with Boeing under the existing contract NAS 15-10000. An Ombudsman has been designated to ensure transparency and address any concerns regarding this contracting action. The initiative aligns with NASA’s ongoing efforts to sustain and enhance the USOS by improving interoperability and docking capabilities with next-generation visiting vehicles.
