Full Description

McCollum Hall was built in 1938 by Clifford "Buck" McCollum, Sr. as a commercial and cultural anchor in Fort Myers Dunbar community. It became known for commerce, music, entertainment, and community connection during the segregation era. The upstairs dance hall hosted nationally significant Black performers and served as a gathering place for the community. The CRA acquired and preserved McCollum Hall to protect its historic character and advance redevelopment along the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard corridor. Current CRA plans envision McCollum Hall as an active community asset with complementary uses, including a restaurant, performing arts or music venue, community and multipurpose space, recording studio, and other redevelopment-supportive activities. The restaurant is intended to be more than a food service operation. It is expected to become a visible activation point for McCollum Hall, support visitation to the larger facility, contribute to neighborhood economic vitality, and reflect the history and identity of the community in a respectful and contemporary manner.
