Russ Creek and Centerville Slough Restoration Project

The Russ Creek and Centerville Slough Restoration Project, led by the Humboldt County Resource Conservation District, focuses on re-establishing the Centerville Slough tidal system and enhancing tidal wetlands in Humboldt County, California. The scope of work includes constructing a new main channel and tributaries with full tidal influence, restoring hydraulic connectivity between the slough and upland stream channels such as Russ Creek and Shaw Creek, and building a system of set-back levees to protect agricultural lands from tidal flooding, Eel River flooding, and dune overwash. Additional project activities involve tide gate repairs, berm modifications, raising Centerville Road, and removing remnant shed debris. The project is supported by a 20-year General Lease for Public Agency Use approved by the California State Lands Commission, extending through December 16, 2045. Environmental compliance is managed under CEQA guidelines, with a certified Environmental Impact Report and a 2025 Addendum addressing modifications required by the California Coastal Commission. Implementation includes strict adherence to mitigation measures for worker health and safety, air quality, biological resource protection for the Tidewater Goby, and water quality controls to manage construction stormwater and herbicide application. Performance takes place on sovereign tide and submerged lands in the Eel River Estuary and Centerville Slough, approximately four miles west of Ferndale.
