The SE Michigan Area Leased Space Accessibility Program is a USPS initiative focused on implementing small-scale handicap improvements across leased facilities in the Midwest. Projects are typically awarded in groups of approximately 30 to pre-approved general contractors. The target buildings are primarily wood-framed structures with masonry or wood bearing walls, though steel-framed buildings are common near major metropolitan areas. The scope of work encompasses several trades, including plumbing updates such as faucet and drinking fountain replacement, and carpentry tasks like modifying customer counters and installing restroom grab bars or exterior ramps. Electrical work is minimal, limited to capping outlets and reconnecting equipment. Additionally, the program includes pavement work involving the repair of asphalt and concrete, parking striping, and the installation of non-illuminated pole signs and concrete ramps with handrails.
