The Shade Integrated Process Team (IPT), established in 2007, was created to improve the Government’s shade assessment and acceptance procedures. It brought together industry representatives, Service members, and Defense Logistics Agency personnel to identify and address key challenges such as establishing standard shade samples, determining tolerance levels, understanding failure review processes, assessing waivers, and improving communication. The team produced various deliverables including process flowcharts and assessment maps, the inclusion of standard sample roll references on shade reports, dissemination of spectrophotometer data, electronic distribution of test requests and results, and the development of a dictionary of shade terms. Additionally, the team simplified the development of shade tolerances, standardized shade processes across Services, coordinated with the DLA equipment evaluation study, and clarified roles and responsibilities within shade management. During 2010-2011, the IPT focused on five critical areas for further action: the availability of standard samples in the correct substrate, the lack of tolerance information provided to Industry, the post-cure shade acceptance process, waiver procedures, and standards maintenance. These focus areas resulted in the drafting of five charters to guide ongoing improvements. The team’s efforts aimed to create a consistent, transparent, and efficient shade acceptance process across all Services, ensuring better communication and more reliable shade evaluations. For additional details or inquiries, contact is available through Debbie Peppenelli at the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility.

The Shade Integrated Process Team (IPT) was established in 2007 to address issues related to Government shade assessment and acceptance procedures. Industry members, along with key Service and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) personnel, met to define and discuss shade related problems. The top issues addressed were the process of establishing standard samples for shade, tolerance determination, understanding the failure review process, waiver assessment, and communication issues. The results of the meetings were flowcharts and assessment process maps of the current and ideal processes. Other team accomplishments included: Inclusion of standard sample roll reference on shade reports Dissemination of the spectrophotometer readings on standard samples rolls (CIELAB values) Immediate distribution of the electronic Request for and Results of Test (DD 1222) for failing shade reports A dictionary of Shade Terms used by the Government labs Simplification of the process of development of shade tolerances Established and standardized the process for shade processes for all Services Established liaison with the DLA equipment evaluation study Obtaining fabric samples without solicitation (drafted for review) Defined shade roles and responsibilities During 2010-11, the team identified five key areas that warranted further investigation. As a result, five charters were drafted for action by members. These charters included: Standard samples in the correct substrate not available for solicitation Tolerance not provided to Industry Post cure shade acceptance process Waivers Standards Maintenance The meeting minutes for 2010 - 2011 are attached for reference.
