Sounder for Microwave-Based Applications (SMBA) Development and Implementation Procurement

The contract involves the development and procurement of eight flight models of the Sounder for Microwave-Based Applications (SMBA), along with one instrument Engineering Test Unit and the necessary Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and simulators. The scope encompasses all phases required to bring the SMBA instruments from design through to launch support, including design, analysis, fabrication, integration, testing, evaluation, and ongoing support. Additionally, the contract requires the supply and maintenance of instrument GSE and support for mission operations at the designated operations facility. The SMBA instrument carries a Class C risk classification. SMBA is a microwave sounding instrument designed for deployment on the NEON program’s low-earth orbit satellites. It features hyperspectral sounding capabilities aimed at acquiring high-resolution atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles. These data products will play a critical role in weather forecasting and atmospheric monitoring applications.
