South Tahoe Basin Wildlife Crossings

The South Tahoe Basin Wildlife Crossings project, identified by WCB Project Tracker ID 2025142, is managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Wildlife Conservation Board. The primary objective is to develop multiple alternatives to determine the most effective locations for wildlife crossing structures along US Highway 50, State Route 89, and Pioneer Trail Road in El Dorado County. This initiative aims to enhance wildlife connectivity and reduce vehicle-wildlife collisions within critical aquatic and terrestrial habitats in the South Basin of Lake Tahoe. The scope of work focuses on feasibility and planning studies, which include the creation of detailed plans, designs, environmental reviews, and necessary Caltrans documentation. Under California Public Resources Code Section 15262, the project is currently issued a Notice of Exemption as it consists of planning and feasibility studies for future actions. Administrative oversight is led by Deputy Executive Director Rebecca Fris, with the project centered in South Lake Tahoe.
