Surfnet Whitley Gardens Last Mile Broadband Project

The Surfnet Whitley Gardens Last Mile Broadband Project involves the deployment of 7 miles of fiber optic cable and supporting strand in a semi-rural suburban area of California characterized by low housing density—no more than four units per acre—and terrain with varied elevations and dense tree coverage. Fiber installation will occur either on existing utility poles owned by PG&E in compliance with General Order 95 and with formal approval for joint occupancy, or underground where necessary, ensuring compatibility with the region’s existing electrical infrastructure, which currently relies on PG&E for power. The typical height of attachment for the fiber and strand will range between 20 and 22 feet to meet regulatory standards. The project is designed to extend broadband access to residents in this wooded, topographically diverse area where arterial access is provided through public highways and local roads. The California Public Utilities Commission is overseeing the initiative, with Andrew Chan serving as the primary point of contact as CEQA Project Manager.
