The University of Vermont Consortium is designated to lead research efforts focused on understanding the prevalence of foodborne pathogens in small specialty farming operations across the Northeast United States. This initiative involves collecting soil and organic amendment samples from participating farms to assess environmental risks associated with produce contamination. The samples will be analyzed through advanced sequencing and laboratory techniques, with results forwarded to OAMT for comprehensive data processing and interpretation. The goal is to generate actionable insights into pathogen dynamics in small-scale agricultural systems to enhance food safety practices and inform regulatory guidance. The effort is funded under the Food and Drug Administration’s oversight, with the procurement forecasted for future contracting and tied to the NAICS code 561499, which covers other support activities for agriculture. The project is aligned with public health objectives related to reducing foodborne illness through targeted environmental monitoring.
