The existing bridge, originally constructed in 1931, has reached a state of irreversible progressive failure and requires urgent replacement to prevent the loss of essential services. This infrastructure is vital as it carries the primary supply and return lines from the Central Heating Plant, which provide heat to over 95 percent of lower yard buildings, including academic facilities and Bancroft. Additionally, the bridge supports the primary raw water line from the main well, over 80 percent of the lower yard's potable water supply, and various power distribution and communication lines.
