NA The U.S. Army Tank-automotive Command (TACOM-WRN) is soliciting offers under Request for Proposal Number: DAAE07-02-R-L522 research and development for encapsulated ceramic tiles. General description of work to be performed: One of the missions of TARDEC is to develop technologies for enhancing survivability of existing armored ground vehicles and future combat systems against future threats. The ongoing army transformation goals and objectives place a high demand on the use of light weight armor to meet t he weight requirements of the Future Combat System (FCS). Armor made of ceramic material is light in comparison to other armors. This effort is directed at developing technologies to reduce the weight of armor for FCS and still provide protection level tha t will defeat potential threats for the FCS. The effort will focus on the effect of lateral confinement pressure on the dwell time and depth of penetration in encapsulated ceramic from ballistic projectile impacts. It requires technical expertise in cerami c materials fabrication, armor design, mathematical formulations of confined ceramic tiles under ballistic loads, development of analysis tools, and hydrocode computer simulations of highly nonlinear phenomenon of the expanding comminuted tile material aft er fracture. This solicitation is competitive and will result in a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract with incremental funding. Solicitation to be issued on or about 29 Jul 02 electronically on FedBizOpps at www.eps.gov. Proposals due on or about 29 Aug 02. O nly electronic submissions will be accepted.
