The Department of Commerce, NOAA office in Seattle intends to negotiate a sole source contract with the University of Western Ontario (UWO) to support the Northwest Fisheries Science Center's (NWFSC) ECOHAB project. This contract focuses on providing specialized flow cytometry and molecular cell detection services. Under the leadership of Dr. Charlie Trick, a renowned biological oceanographer and expert in nutrient dynamics and flow cytometry, UWO will assist with field community sampling and antibody development. Key activities include developing independent measurements of cellular iron status using fluorescent probes, creating fluorescent antibodies specific to Pseudo-nitzschia, and fluorescent markers for domoic acid (DA) detection in both water and cellular samples. The research involves analyzing 30 to 50 community samples daily during two three-week cruises scheduled for July and September 2003. UWO will be responsible for calibrating and maintaining the flow cytometer before, during, and after each cruise, as well as conducting data reduction, statistical analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of results leading to publication. Dr. Trick’s expertise, combined with UWO's technical capabilities, will provide comprehensive insights into nutrient regulation, competition, and secondary metabolite production in marine ecosystems. This simplified acquisition has an estimated value below $100,000.
