AI Contract Overview

The contract pertains to the development of a modularly-configurable multi-zone ion trap technology (MMITT) aimed at advancing quantum computing research. The primary goal is to create a standardized ion trap system that minimizes the extensive fabrication, testing, and calibration efforts traditionally required by researchers, which currently consumes significant time and resources. In addition to the ion trap itself, the project emphasizes developing integrated modular subsystems including control electronics, lasers for cooling and logic gate operations, magnetic field sources and shielding, vacuum bake-out aids, and detectors. These components are intended to facilitate more efficient progression in ion trap research and expand the technology’s scalability from a few ionic qubits to potentially hundreds as research advances. Respondents to the solicitation are expected to detail how they will engage with the scientific community to iteratively improve and integrate the design according to evolving research needs. The effort is anticipated to require a sustained collaboration by a small specialized team over multiple years. Furthermore, there is an interest in how successful development and production of the ion traps could be commercialized for availability to researchers outside the ARDA program. Proposals for this addendum were due by mid-March 2005, with awards anticipated around April 1, 2005, encouraging early submission of initial contact documents to participate in this strategic quantum computing technology initiative.

General Information Document Type: Addendum to Special Notice Solicitation Number: DOI-SNOTE-040804-01 Description: Modularly-configurable Multi-zone Ion Trap Technology (MMITT) PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: A specific new task has been identified under the major area of interest of Quantum Computing: There is interest in research and development to production of a standard modularly-configurable multi-zone ion trap technology that would be readily and economically available to researchers in the field of ion trap computing technology. The main objective of developing MMITT technology is to eliminate the substantial trap fabrication, testing and calibration effort (often about 1 experimenter year) generally required by researchers (who must currently design, fabricate and test a new trap before they can proceed to the specific R&D tasks of their interest). Furthermore, there is also interest in integrated-design modular subsystems to support the ion traps in terms of control electronics, lasers for cooling and logic gate operations, magnetic field sources and shielding, vacuum bake-out aids and procedures, detectors, and other subsystems that enable ion trap researchers to proceed more efficiently to specific R&D studies. (For further information about these interests, see 'Specifications for a "test ion trap" for qubit manipulation', David Wineland, et. al., December 22, 2004, at http://webteam.nbc.gov/pmb/nbc/qisbaa.html). There is particular interest in ion trap and subsystem technology that is expandable from several ionic qubits to 1-2 hundreds of such qubits as research in this field progresses. Respondents to this addendum should indicate a plan for interacting with the ion trap researchers and evolving the design to higher levels of integration as needed. In particular, due to the combination of requirements and technical specialties needed to accomplish this task, a small team must probably be developed and held together over several years to evolve the design and fabrication technology as the experimenters' needs evolve. Respondents should also indicate how they might commercialize delivery of ion traps to experimenters who are not part of ARDA's program. PROPOSAL SUBMISSION AND DEADLINES Awards for this addendum are anticipated about April 1, 2005. Proposals will be due no later than March 15, 2005. Hence, respondents are encouraged to submit Initial Contact Papers as soon as is feasible.

Bolstering Underutilized Industry by Leveraging Technology Transfer (BUILTT) pilot program
Solicitation # 10292026-LR-27
The Department of Energy, in partnership with the National Nuclear Security Administration, has announced the Bolstering Underutilized Industry by Leveraging Technology Transfer (BUILTT) pilot program. This initiative, conducted by the Nevada National Security Sites, Y-12 National Security Complex, and Kansas City National Security Campus, aims to assist qualified U.S. small and medium-sized businesses in manufacturing low-volume, high-impact technologies developed by DOE/NNSA Labs, Plants, and Sites. These technologies, which include specialized optical imaging, radiation and chemical sensing systems, precision electrical components, and advanced materials, often have limited commercial markets but are critical for government mission requirements. Under the program, selected businesses may receive a Cost Reduction License (CRL) for a nominal fee, granting them the rights to produce specified technologies for sale to the DOE, NNSA, and other government customers at pre-negotiated prices. Eligibility is limited to U.S.-based SMBs, with preference given to those near participating sites or those with SBA 8(a) or HUBZone designations. Interested parties are evaluated based on their technical and manufacturing capabilities, financial capacity, and ability to meet regulatory and security requirements. Responses must be submitted to the Technology Partnerships and Intellectual Property Office by April 1, 2027, and are categorized under NAICS code 541715.
