The U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center intends to award a purchase order to GSE Incorporated, a small business based in Incline Village, Nevada, for research and development focused on high speed, multi-fuel diesel engine technology. This project aims to develop engines with high power density for airborne applications, specifically targeting weights of 1.5 lbs/hp or better through an innovative injection and combustion system. The award is being pursued on a non-competitive basis as GSE is identified as the only responsible source capable of satisfying the agency requirements. This acquisition follows a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research contract completed by GSE in August 2002. While GSE is currently being considered for a Phase II award under the competitive SBIR program, the Army seeks to pursue work originally outlined in the Phase I option in the interim. The contract is designated as a total small business set-aside and will be awarded utilizing simplified acquisition procedures.
