Research to evaluate the effects of air leakage on operations and performance of locomotive automatic engine start/stop (AESS) systems. Understand the impact of excessive air leakage on AESS' ability to operate as intended. This project focuses on quantifying the fuel penalty associated with air leaks on the locomotive and simulated air leaks in the break pipe air system. Previous SwRI screening tests only identified the fuel penalties associated with the line haul and switcher duty cycles during continuous operation but did not identify the penalty associated with the additional time that the Automatic Engine Start Stop (AESS) system needs to operate the engine to maintain the air pressure in the Main Reservoir (MR).

Real-Time Bridge Condition and Rating System DemonstrationThe Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is seeking to demonstrate a cutting-edge prototype system aimed at enhancing the real-time condition assessment and load rating of railroad bridges across the U.S. This initiative addresses the critical responsibility of railroad operators to maintain bridge safety in compliance with federal regulations outlined in 49 CFR Part 237. Leveraging recent advancements in sensor technology, edge computing, and machine learning, the project intends to improve the accuracy and timeliness of inspections, thereby advancing inspection methodologies and data management practices for railroad bridges. This contract opportunity, titled "Real-Time Bridge Condition and Rating System Demonstration," is listed under solicitation number AG40793_1767642404 and targets specialized technical expertise within the NAICS code 541715. The FRA’s Offices of Railroad Safety and Research and Development are collaborating to deploy and validate this innovative technology on a diverse range of in-service bridges. The effort aims to propel the state of the art in bridge inspection, ultimately supporting enhanced safety and regulatory compliance nationwide. Points of contact for the project include Matthew Carr and Jennifer Wilsnack, who can provide additional information to interested parties.
