The U.S. Department of Education has contracted the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) to conduct a preliminary study focused on experimental research into culturally based education for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students. This study involves a literature review on the effectiveness of culturally based education, assessing the feasibility of conducting an experimental study, designing the experiment if feasible, and hosting a symposium to discuss the experimental design. The design phase has been exercised, and future full-scale experimental research may be solicited through a Request for Proposals (RFP) if the preliminary findings indicate feasibility. To ensure transparency and provide equal access to information, NWREL is holding a series of three public briefings. The first two briefings took place in Seattle and Albuquerque in 2003 and 2004, respectively, with the final briefing scheduled in Washington, DC on June 7, 2005. This event will review findings and progress, enabling potential bidders to stay informed about the preliminary study as they prepare for possible future solicitations. Interested individuals can contact NWREL for attendance details. The contract is managed through the Department of Education’s Contracts and Acquisitions Management office.
