Full Description

This NOFO will support research using human-relevant New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to advance understanding of the earliest events that initiate and drive Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Projects will use human cells and tissues and innovative experimental and computational approaches–including organoids, microphysiological systems, and other advanced human-relevant models–to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in T1D initiation and early disease progression. The research is expected to identify and validate early biomarkers and therapeutic targets and advance new strategies to prevent or interrupt disease progression before substantial pancreatic beta cell loss occurs.

Funded projects will become part of the Human Islet Research Network (HIRN), providing a collaborative environment that brings together complementary expertise, technologies, human biological resources, and datasets. Awardees will be expected to participate in collaborative activities, share tools and data, coordinate the use of scarce human pancreatic tissues, and promote harmonization and interoperability of approaches and datasets where appropriate. Through this coordinated research effort, the initiative seeks to overcome barriers that have limited progress by individual laboratories and accelerate the translation of discoveries about early human T1D into biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and ultimately preventive or treatment strategies.

Firefox
Solicitation # DARPA-PS-26-137
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office has issued solicitation DARPA-PS-26-137 for the Firefox program, which aims to develop a 100-channel, non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) featuring 50-micron spatial and 100-microsecond temporal resolution. The program is divided into two primary technical areas: the development of components for dynamic rastering and scanning of coherent optical signals to target multiple regions of interest, and the creation of data processing architectures beyond the digital domain to manage high data rates and computational burdens. This 36-month effort is structured across three phases, with anticipated funding for multiple awards ranging between 4 million and 7 million dollars. The procurement is conducted as an Other Transaction for Prototype, utilizing a model agreement rather than standard FAR clauses, though it requires CMMC Level 1 self-assessment for safeguarding federal contract information. The selection process is based on a two-step submission: an initial abstract due October 19, 2026, followed by an invitation to submit an Oral Presentation Proposal (OPP) package by November 9, 2026. Proposals are evaluated as selectable or non-selectable based on the innovation and feasibility of the technical approach, relevant qualifications of the personnel, and the practicality of the budget. Performance is measured against specific technical metrics, such as a 10 ms full volume scan rate in Phase 2, with payments tied to a 16-milestone schedule and processed via the Wide Area Workflow system.

Biolab Mirror: Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) Digital Twin for Intent Characterization and Bio-Containment Integrity
Solicitation # DTR27TZ02-NV001
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency, under the Department of War, is soliciting proposals for the Biolab Mirror, an AI/ML-driven Digital Twin designed to ensure bio-containment integrity and characterize intent in state-sponsored biological research facilities. The project implements a Physics-to-Mesh Zero Trust architecture that cross-validates digital telemetry from LIMS, SCADA, and BMS logs against unalterable physical and biological laws, such as thermodynamics and metabolic rates. This system aims to detect clandestine pathogen scaling and containment spoofing by identifying coherence failures. Beyond its defensive application, the Biolab Mirror will serve as a cyber-physical sandbox for simulating multi-domain attacks against high-containment infrastructure, filling a critical gap in current cyber-range emulation. This is a phased STTR program with a total small business set-aside. Phase I focuses on delivering a conceptual architecture and a working software prototype, while Phase II, with a ceiling price of 1.5 million dollars, involves full project effort over a 24-month duration. Proposals are evaluated based on technical merit, investigator qualifications, and commercial potential. Applicants must be registered in SAM and the SBA Company Registry. Compliance requirements include CMMC standards for safeguarding controlled unclassified information and strict adherence to organizational conflict of interest disclosures. Proposals must be submitted via the DSIP portal by January 6, 2026.
