The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, intends to sole source a fixed-price purchase order to Intuitive Surgical Inc. for software updates to its DaVinci XI Surgical Robots, exclusively used in perioperative procedures. Intuitive Surgical is identified as the sole worldwide provider capable of updating the proprietary software of the DaVinci XI System, with no authorized competitors or alternative service providers existing in the market. The acquisition falls under FAR Part 13 Simplified Acquisition Procedures, permitting sole source award due to the unique proprietary nature of the equipment and the absence of any other source capable of performing the required updates. The product is classified under NAICS code 339112 for surgical instrument manufacturing and the contract action is exempt from competitive requirements under federal acquisition regulations. All technical and service support for the DaVinci XI Robots remains exclusively under Intuitive Surgical’s control, as the company holds all proprietary rights, does not distribute through group purchasing organizations or third-party channels, and provides the only authorized maintenance and software enhancements. The procurement will be issued under solicitation number 26-005818 with a response deadline of June 16, 2026, and interested parties may submit comments to the NIH Contract Specialist Kristin Nagashima, though the government retains full discretion to proceed without competition regardless of external input. The place of performance is confirmed as the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, with the purchase governed under the simplified acquisition threshold procedures applicable to purchases under $100,000.
