Vista Continuation High School Modernization

The Kern Union High School District is undertaking the Vista Continuation High School Modernization project on a 15.5-acre site in Bakersfield, California. The project involves the demolition of existing buildings, internal roads, parking, and courtyards to make way for approximately 50,000 square feet of new construction. Key deliverables include four conventionally framed buildings—a gymnasium, a multi-purpose and cafeteria building, an administration building, and a two-story classroom building with a library—alongside a 1,334-square-foot prefabricated field house. Site improvements will feature a central outdoor courtyard, two outdoor basketball courts, relocated ballfields, and the integration of renewable solar energy via rooftop panels or solar-covered parking. The project aims to increase student capacity from 210 to approximately 440 students and add up to five staff members. Construction is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026, with an estimated duration of 12 to 18 months and an operational target for 2027. Environmental compliance is a primary focus, with the project adhering to CEQA guidelines, including a Mitigated Negative Declaration and an Incidental Take Permit for the San Joaquin kit fox. Technical requirements include strict geotechnical oversight for imported engineered fill and compliance with California Education Code if state funds are utilized. Project administration is led by Facilities Director Randy Rowles and Principal Planner Consultant Jaymie Brauer.
