AI Contract Overview
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, is seeking to procure two water-cooled chiller units to support ongoing scientific research in molecular structure and protein interactions conducted by the Solid-State NMR and Biomolecular Physics Section. These chillers are essential to maintain the operational integrity of two helium reliquifier systems, which eliminate the need for frequent helium refills in superconducting NMR magnets located in Buildings 5 and 8 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The water-cooled design is required to prevent excessive heat buildup in the magnet rooms, ensuring stable environmental conditions critical for high-precision NMR measurements. The project supports the NIDDK’s broader mission to advance understanding of diseases related to metabolism, digestion, and kidney function through cutting-edge physical and chemical research. The solicitation, numbered 75N98026Q00896HASKRISCO, was posted on July 28, 2026, with bids due by August 6, 2026. This is a presolicitation notice for a procurement classified under NAICS code 333415, indicating equipment manufacturing related to laboratory and industrial machinery. No set-aside is being used, meaning the opportunity is open to all qualified contractors. The place of performance is Bethesda, Maryland, and the primary point of contact for inquiries is Vishnuvajjala Hanumanth Rao, reachable via email at vishnuh@mail.nih.gov. The procurement is managed through the Department of Health and Human Services under the Office of Acquisition and Logistics, and further details are available through the SAM.gov portal.

Full Description
The mission of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is to conduct and support medical research and research training and to disseminate science-based information on diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases, to improve people’s health and quality of life.
The Solid-State NMR and Biomolecular Physics Section (SSNMRBPS) of the Laboratory of Chemical Physics, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases carries out research on the molecular structures and interactions of proteins and protein assemblies with important roles in biology and human disease. This research depends on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements that are performed in helium-cooled superconducting magnets. To eliminate requirements for periodic helium refills of two NMR magnets, located in buildings 5 and 8 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD, SSNMRBPS is currently procuring two helium reliquifier systems. These helium reliquifier systems require a constant flow of chilled water to remove heat that is generated in the helium reliquification process. It is therefore necessary to procure two chiller units, which will be used in conjunction with the helium reliquifier systems. The two chiller units must be water-cooled (rather than air-cooled) to avoid excessive heating within the rooms that contain the NMR magnet
