Statement of Requirements Saint Louis VAMC is requesting a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). A VAD is a mechanical circulatory device that is used to partially or completely replace the function of a failing heart. VAD's are designed to assist either the right (RVAD) or left (LVAD) ventricle, or both at once (BIVAD). This would be used temporarily or for a short duration in urgent or emergent situations such as refractory cardiovascular collapse and failure to wean off cardiopulmonary bypass. A VAD differs from a standard "Heart- lung" machine in that the patient can be awake and ambulatory. Specifications: " Magnetically levitated pump impeller to minimize blood related complications (hemolysis) " Ability to provide left, right, or biventricular support.
