Adaptively Managed Translocation and Propagation of Mohave Ground Squirrels

The California Energy Commission is seeking sources for solicitation EPC-25-006, titled Adaptively Managed Translocation and Propagation of Mohave Ground Squirrels. This project focuses on paper and zoological research to develop adaptively managed translocation and propagation programs for the Mohave Ground Squirrel, a State-threatened species petitioned under the Endangered Species Act. The primary objective is to establish modern, science-based protocols for the effective relocation of these squirrels from solar energy facilities in the Mojave Desert, thereby minimizing biological impacts and streamlining the deployment of clean energy in California. The scope of work includes science-based capture of the species from the desert and the development of husbandry and propagation protocols within a laboratory setting. Activities consist of basic data collection, research, experimental management, and resource evaluation. The project is located in Palm Desert, Riverside County, and has been granted a categorical exemption under California Code Regulations as it involves research without major environmental disturbance. The effort is managed by the California Energy Commission with primary contact Julia Harnad and project manager Kathy Simon.
