Atwater Elementary School Playground and Campus Exterior Upgrades Project

The Atwater Elementary School Playground and Campus Exterior Upgrades Project is a comprehensive improvement initiative for the 3.9-acre campus located at 3271 Silver Lake Boulevard in Los Angeles. With a budget of 8,626,490 dollars approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education on January 14, 2025, the project focuses on replacing approximately 66,000 square feet of paving in the main and kindergarten playgrounds. The scope includes the application of solar reflective coatings, installation of new playground equipment and an outdoor learning environment, campus-wide greening and landscaping, privacy fencing, and exterior painting of buildings and structures. Additionally, the project encompasses critical infrastructure upgrades to the trash enclosure, sanitary sewer and storm drainage utilities, and general accessibility improvements. The project must adhere to all state, federal, and local regulations, as well as the District Standards and Specifications adopted in December 2023. Key operational requirements include mandatory soil sampling and testing prior to pavement removal, strict oversight by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety for soil transport, and compliance with South Coast Air Quality Management District Rule 1466. Environmental protections are prioritized, requiring arborist consultation and principal approval for tree removal, nesting bird surveys if work occurs between February and August, and immediate cessation of work upon the discovery of subsurface archaeological or paleontological resources. The project is managed by Christy Wong and is designed to benefit students, staff, and the broader community.
