The contract involves a preliminary study conducted by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory under the U.S. Department of Education, focusing on culturally based education for American Indian and Alaska Native students. The study's main objectives include reviewing literature on the effectiveness of such education, assessing the feasibility of conducting an experimental test of its impact, and potentially designing the experiment if deemed feasible. Additionally, the study includes organizing a symposium on the experimental design. Should the preliminary work indicate feasibility, the Department of Education may issue a Request for Proposals for a full-scale experimental study in the future. To ensure transparency and provide equal access to information for potential bidders, NWREL is hosting three public briefings to share findings and progress. The first briefing took place in Seattle in 2003, and the second is scheduled for December 15, 2004, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The third briefing will occur in Washington, DC, with the date yet to be determined. Interested parties are encouraged to contact designated representatives at NWREL or the Department of Education for details on attendance. This effort supports the Department’s commitment to culturally relevant educational research aimed at improving outcomes for American Indian and Alaska Native students.
