CUP 98-0022 Mesquite Mine Expansion

Western Mesquite Mines, Inc. is proposing the Rainbow East Exploration Project on Bureau of Land Management-administered lands in Imperial County, California. This short-term exploratory drilling program involves the construction of up to 22 drill pads for 23 exploration holes, each featuring a lined sump for fluids and cuttings. The project includes the creation of five new short-term access roads totaling 4,500 linear feet and the widening of approximately 1,315 linear feet of BLM Route 949. Approximately 91,000 pounds of material will be removed for testing, resulting in a total surface disturbance of 2.34 acres over a period of up to 24 months. All short-term disturbances will be reclaimed upon completion, and no permanent mining facilities or mineral production are proposed. The project is managed by Imperial County and is subject to the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act through Reclamation Plan No. 24-0001. Environmental reviews, including a CEQA Initial Study and an addendum to the 2002 FEIR/EIS, have concluded that the exploration activities will not result in new significant environmental effects. Additionally, the broader Mesquite Mine Expansion is governed by an Incidental Take Permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to address the impact on 456 acres of endangered desert tortoise habitat. The overall project expiration date has been extended to December 31, 2031.
