Desert Pupfish Conservation on Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians (TMDCI) Land

The project involves constructing two new ponds on land owned by the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians, adjacent to the Whitewater Channel, to support the conservation of the endangered desert pupfish. These ponds will function as breeding habitats and refugia, safeguarding genetic diversity and serving as a secure backup population that can later be reintroduced into natural watercourses within the Salton Sink basin. The design prioritizes the long-term sustainability of the species by providing controlled, high-quality freshwater environments that mimic essential natural conditions. Beyond the pupfish, the ponds will act as critical resources for a wide array of wildlife, particularly migratory birds and local species passing through the region, offering reliable drinking water and feeding opportunities in an otherwise arid landscape. The initiative is led by the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy, with coordination involving The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, and is positioned to enhance ecological resilience across the broader desert ecosystem.
