Portions of an existing gunite covered hillside on the west side of Kamehameha Highway between the Center Drive and Radford Drive intersections has debonded from its substrate. An Engineering investigation was conducted in September of 2018, the following recommendations were provided. - Invasive vegetation and trees should be removed down to its roots from the top of the gunite covered hillside along its entire length. - After invasive vegetation and tree removal, an herbicide should be applied to the top of the hillside to reduce the potential for the invasive vegetation and trees from re-growing. - Measures such as chemical root barriers should be provided to prevent roots from landscape vegetation and trees located above the hillside from growing down the hillside. - For the area adjacent to fallen gunite, the remaining portion of debonded gunite should be removed up to the top of the hillside. - After removing debonded portions of gunite, the exposed volcanic tuff rock substrate should be cleaned of any vegetation, roots, and loose material. -Prior to applying new gunite, a wire mesh reinforcing should be provided. It should be anchored to the top of the hillside and draped over the cleaned volcanic tuff rock substrate. - The new gunite should be applied over the wire mesh and volcanic tuff rock substrate.
