2026 HIGH PRIORITY FLOOD RISK REDUCTION PROJECTS

The 2026 High Priority Flood Risk Reduction Projects, managed by the Regional Water Quality Control Board for the San Francisco Bay, focus on mitigating flood risks in the City of San Mateo. The project targets the concrete-lined 16th Avenue and 19th Avenue channels, where overgrown invasive vegetation like cattails, brass buttons, and bitter dock has obstructed water flow and caused flooding in nearby streets and buildings. These channels serve as critical drainage paths leading to Seal Slough and the San Francisco Bay. Work will specifically include the removal of invasive vegetation along 420 linear feet of the 16th Avenue channel bank. To ensure long-term stability and ecological health, the area will be treated with a native seed mix to promote native vegetation cover and prevent future erosion. The project is coordinated between the California Regional Water Quality Control Board and the City of San Mateo to restore the conveyance capacity of these essential drainage systems.
