AI Contract Overview
The contract involves the supply, installation, and testing of a stainless-steel pipeline system designed to transport approximately 40,000 metric tons of Argon for the DUNE experiment. The Argon will be delivered in liquid form to the Ross Shaft Argon Receiving station located at the surface, where it will be stored in tanks before being converted to its gaseous state. The gaseous Argon will then be transported underground through a pipeline with varying diameters: 8-inch diameter Schedule 10 from the Argon Receiving Facility to the Ross Shaft, 6-inch diameter Schedule 10 from the Ross Shaft collar to the 4850 Level, and then again 8-inch diameter Schedule 10 from the Ross Shaft to the Central Utility Cavern (CUC). This solicitation, titled "Argon Piping Supply, Installation and Testing," issued by Fermilab under the Department of Energy, seeks contractors capable of meeting these specialized piping requirements at the Lead, South Dakota site. The solicitation was posted on June 2, 2026, with responses due by July 27, 2026. The contract references NAICS code 236210, indicating construction and related work, and there is no set-aside for small or disadvantaged businesses. Full Description
As part of the DUNE experiment, approximately 40,000 metric tons of Argon is required to be transported from the surface to the Central Utility Cavern (CUC) at the 4850 Level. This Argon will arrive at the Ross Shaft Argon Receiving station in liquid form where it will be stored in tanks. It will then be converted to the gaseous phase, where it will be transported underground through a stainless-steel pipeline. This pipeline will be 8” diameter Schedule 10 between the Argon Receiving Facility and the Ross shaft, 6” diameter schedule 10 from Ross shaft collar to the 4850 Level, then return to 8” diameter schedule 10 from the Ross shaft to the CUC.
This SOW defined as “Argon Gas Piping Supply and Installation for LBNF” outlines the requirements for the supply, installation and testing of a stainless-steel pipeline at LBNF as described above.
