Beckwourth Peak Trail

The Sierra Nevada Conservancy is amending its existing grant agreement with the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship to provide additional funding for the completion of the final segment of the Beckwourth Peak Recreation Project, a nonmotorized Class 3 trail stretching 8.3 miles from south of Portola around Beckwourth Peak to Portola City Park and Carman Saddle. The amendment supports the construction of this trail using hand tools and native materials in strict compliance with United States Forest Service standards, ensuring minimal environmental impact and sustainable trail design. The project aims to enhance public access to national forest lands for local residents and visitors, reinforcing recreational opportunities and community connectivity in Plumas County. A notice of exemption under Class 4, 15304 Minor Alterations to Land, was originally filed by Plumas County in September 2019 and later adopted by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy in March 2022 under the same environmental tracking number. The trail construction will avoid the use of any foreign materials, prioritizing ecological integrity and alignment with natural landscapes. Primary contact for the project is Andy Fristensky, Field Operations & Grants Division Chief at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, with Greg Williams of the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship serving as the partner representative. The project remains actively managed under the conservation and recreation objectives outlined in the original agreement, with funding now extended to secure the final phase of this key regional trail initiative.
