George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area ADA Trail Construction

The California Department of Parks and Recreation, Central Valley District, is forecasting a construction project at the George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area in Merced County to improve accessibility for visitors with mobility challenges. The project involves the construction of a 0.75-mile ADA compliant trail between Kelley Road and the Merced River, measuring approximately 3,960 feet long and 5 feet wide. This work includes clearing the alignment, excavating 5,850 cubic feet of soil, and grading up to 19,720 cubic feet of soil. Key infrastructure elements include the installation of dry-stacked rock walls for edging, two bridges (approximately 60 and 65 feet) with steel stringers and rock abutments, a 20-foot boardwalk/puncheon, and a 306-foot elevated wooden boardwalk. Additional site enhancements include two wooden benches and one interpretive panel. The scope of work also includes significant fencing updates, starting with the removal of 3,100 linear feet of existing barbed wire fence. A new split rail fence will be installed, requiring the excavation of 390 holes to secure 6-foot posts. The project is classified under NAICS code 237990 and has been granted a Notice of Exemption based on categorical classes 1, 3, and 4, indicating that the alterations and new structures will have negligible environmental impact.
