AI Contract Overview
The contract outlines a program funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) dedicated to supporting the career development of physicians committed to diabetes research, with a particular emphasis on addressing the shortage of pediatric endocrinologists and physician-scientists in this field. This initiative, named the National K12 Program for the Career Development of Clinician-Scientists in Diabetes Research (Diabetes-DOCS), focuses primarily on Type 1 Diabetes research, with potential expansion to include innovative Type 2 Diabetes studies starting in the program's second year if additional funds become available. While the program is administered through a single national center, scholars will be appointed and supported at their respective home institutions nationwide. The goal is to cultivate a greater number of independent physician-scientists aligned with NIDDK’s mission to advance diabetes research. The funding opportunity excludes scholars from leading independent clinical trials; however, participants may be involved in such trials if led by experienced mentors, including proposing ancillary studies or collaborating on new trials under supervision. This program operates under federal authorization through the Public Health Service Act and related federal regulations and is supported by the American Relief Act of 2025. Contact information for program inquiries is provided, ensuring interested parties can reach out to the designated NIH official. The opportunity reflects a strategic investment in developing leadership and research capacity in diabetes to ultimately enhance scientific understanding and patient care outcomes.
