AI Contract Overview
The NIH Common Fund, in collaboration with multiple NIH Institutes and Centers, is preparing to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the RNomics Molecular Standards initiative under the broader RNomics program, which aims to advance the study of the complete RNA landscape in biological systems. This specific effort will focus on developing, testing, refining, and distributing molecular reference standards for RNA molecules, particularly those containing modified nucleosides and modified oligonucleotides, to ensure consistent, reproducible, and comparable measurements across diverse laboratories and technologies. The program will produce initial and expanded releases of these standards alongside guidance on their optimal selection and application, with plans to secure their long-term availability beyond the grant period to benefit the wider scientific community. These molecular standards are designed to serve as benchmarks for evaluating RNA sequencing, modification detection, and functional analysis tools, thereby enhancing data reliability and interoperability in RNA research. While applications are not currently being accepted, this forecast notice provides advance notice to investigators and institutions to foster collaboration, refine research proposals, and align their efforts with the program’s goals. The initiative is managed by the National Institutes of Health through the Department of Health and Human Services, with all inquiries directed to the Common Fund RNomics Program at cfrnomics@od.nih.gov. The anticipated posting date for the formal solicitation is August 5, 2026, and the program invites broad participation from the research community to ensure the standards meet diverse technical and scientific needs.

Full Description
The NIH Common Fund, in partnership with other NIH Institutes and Centers, plans to issue Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs) for the RNomics program, which seeks to develop tools for studying the full set of RNA molecules (the RNome) in cells and tissues. The program will support technologies and resources that enable integrated analysis of RNA sequences, modifications, structures, locations, interactions, and functions to advance understanding of health and disease. RNomics includes four initiatives: technology enhancement centers, transformative technologies, molecular standards, and a coordinating center. Applications are not being solicited at this time. This notice is being provided to give potential applicants time to develop meaningful collaborations and strong projects.
This NOFO will support the molecular standards initiative. Awards will support development, testing, refinement, and distribution of RNA molecular reference standards for use across the RNomics program and the broader research community. The work will include initial and expanded releases of standards for modified nucleosides and modified oligonucleotides, guidance on best practices for selecting and using standards, and planning for long-term availability beyond the funding period. These standards will support benchmarking, reproducibility, and comparison of RNA technologies across laboratories and platforms.
