DoW Reconstructive Transplant, Investigator-Initiated Research Award

The FY26 Reconstructive Transplant Research Program Investigator-Initiated Research Award supports innovative, scientifically rigorous studies aimed at advancing reconstructive transplant research and improving patient outcomes, particularly for military Service Members, Veterans, and their families. Proposals must demonstrate strong scientific rationale and direct military relevance, addressing healthcare needs arising from traumatic injuries, and are expected to contribute meaningfully to short- and long-term advances in the field. Eligible research spans the full spectrum from basic science and preclinical animal models to clinical studies involving human subjects or anatomical tissues, but explicitly excludes clinical trials as defined by federal guidelines. A robust study design with attention to reproducibility, including a statistically sound power analysis, is required to ensure the validity and translational potential of the proposed work. Applicants must include preliminary or published data that directly support the feasibility and relevance of the research to reconstructive transplantation, and projects must align with one or more of the designated FY26 RTRP Focus Areas. While collaboration with military researchers and clinicians is encouraged to enhance relevance and impact, it is not a mandatory requirement. The program is open to investigators across academic, medical, and research institutions who can demonstrate a clear pathway from laboratory findings to improved care and quality of life. Applications should emphasize the potential for broad impact both within the reconstructive transplant community and among the wider population of trauma survivors.
